What Protection Means In The Age Of Information Technology

By Froilan Gauss

From Keanu Reeves' The Matrix Trilogy, and Will Smith's I Robot, to the animated picture entitled Wall-E, these are all movies that had futuristic themes and showed what living would be like in a few years or so. But apart from robots, tin men, and special effects, these movies had another thing in common, and it is those super computers that were immensely powerful and had the capability to have power over a whole lot of things in the real world.

If you take these different movies, look outside the action scenes and the story lines, and just concentrate on the different types of technology that they are showing, it will not take you long to notice that the technology that we have nowadays is not very distinct from the ones that they have in those "futuristic" movies. In a nutshell, these movies were somehow able to foretell, or at least point us in the right track of the way technology will advance in the future.

In our world today, it is difficult to visualize what life would be like without the abundant technologies that we use in our daily lives, mainly the powerful computers that have begun to participate in roles of ever growing significance in our modern society. Computers today are able to operate everything from very complex machinery in factories, to a variety of vehicles like aircrafts, cars, and water vessels, to robots with artificial intelligence. Without even knowing it, we have moved into the period that these futuristic films have been portraying.

One of the major elements that helped hurry up the course of improving our technology, is the internet, it brought the minds of individuals from all over the globe closer together, enabling them to share ideas with one another and work as one in ways that were never thought achievable. The internet offered numerous possibilities for advancement that were previously never heard of, but unfortunately, along with these advantages also came a dark side. The advantages of instant communication of massive quantities of information through the internet also meant that sometimes, sensitive information can get out.

These gaps in information security gave rise to high-tech cryptography, which is essentially a collective term for practices that are being used to secure the great amounts of information passing through computer systems all around the world. Cryptography also includes terms like root signing and trusted root certificates, which are measures that increase the security and prevent sensitive information from leaking out of a private system.

It is turning into increasingly challenging to protect important information from numerous elements, especially in a time where data can be treated as something that is worth a lot more compared to any currency, this is why efficient security measures are becoming more and more important.
