How Can Ethernet Metro Bring Datacentres Together?

By Daniel Handler

Networks and datacenters are two of the most important components of computing as we know it today. Once you connect various computing resources through some specific protocols you create a network that enables users on the same network to share resources. On the other hand, datacenters simply are hub of computer systems and facilities. The datacenter is where resources for distribution through the internet or any alternative network are hosted. The two are, as elaborated, closely related. On one hand, the network helps in the distribution of computing resources while on the other hand, the datacenter works as the storage for these computing resources.

Ethernet Metro by definition is a network whose services can be used over a large city or metropolitan area. Offices, campuses, and other types of branches that belong to businesses and institutions can be connected in this manner.

Carrier Ethernet technology is applied by Metro Ethernet since it is the most popularly used network in other types of networks such as LAN and WAN. It is formulated, however, to be used over much greater distances than the operations of other networks would be. Due to its being used widely, Carrier Ethernet has many other benefits that work to make it very appropriate for a Metro Ethernet service. The first benefit of the technology is simplicity of use. Connecting networks is very simple when they are on the same protocol. Resolving technical problems that arise also becomes so easy especially because the technology used is common and well understood. It is possible to make connections of multiple speeds with Metro Ethernet. This allows for the connection of slower and faster networks through either cable or fiber optic.

Metro Ethernet stands as the number one choice in connecting data centers because of a number of reasons. First is the large capacity that is carried by Metro lines. Due to their type of operations, data centers need huge capacities in order to effectively operate their business. Metro Ethernet is therefore the best high performance option for this purpose. Data centers in most cases hold very relevant information for others and thus data security is a main concern for all. The Metro Ethernet makes it almost impossible for hackers and other such individuals to get a hold of information as compared to other network options.

The security, reliability and simplicity of the connection between main offices, branches and campuses determine how well they can access the resources on each other's network. If the head office is where the main company data center is maintained, then resources there can be accessed by branches across town in a very efficient manner. Data centers in other branches should also be effectively monitored by the head office in a cost efficient way. Creating a connection between these networks using the Metro Ethernet brings about the advantage of reduced communication costs and reduced stationary and transport costs.
