You pick it up, and the rubberized matte finish feels good under your fingers -- like there's no way you're going to drop it unless you're a complete klutz. Also annoying is that the Windows 7 version it comes with idiotically does not let you choose a background.
My Acer Aspire netbook over-heated and died yesterday. My first impressions were pretty good.
Again, no noticeable improvements but at least I can change my background. They keyboard is nicely laid out.
The battery life also is amazing, compared to my Dell laptop, which is another plus for taking to an all-day conference. With my Dell, I had to search for a seat near an outlet. Also battery life has dropped from 11 hours (NB305) to 9.5 hours (NB505), according to their specs. I am not sure if this is a different 6 cell battery, a function of the Atom 455, or Win 7. I wanted to upgrade the memory from 1GB to 2GB and went onto the Toshiba web site to make sure I got the right memory module. However, the module that came didn't fit into the slot. It is surprisingly fast (I upgraded to 2 GB) and allows me to have multiple pages and programs open. It seems sturdy but light.
They give you 3 USB ports, as well as sound and mic ports; the sound is excellent through my Apple earbuds. I can't believe some of you complained about this unit only having one speaker; if it had two it would NOT sound that much better. I would definitely recommend this device to anybody. I love the color on this netbook (turquoise). I haven't run a battery test yet but all indications are it will last quite a long time. I expect at least 6 hours minimum. For photo editing and tracking I installed the Canon Photo Stitch software that came with the camera. The Laptop even plays back my HD videos at full resolution with only a slight amount of pausing (glitching) in Windows media player.
That helped me to make the decision on this netbook. I did a month of research before making my decision. I did a lot of home work on a lot of Netbooks and this Toshiba came out on top. So when it came time to purchase this netbook I found and received the lowest price through Amazon. There is a wonderful free little program available on the Internet called "Batch Image Resizer" and any full sized pictures I wanted to email, I just ran though that and all was fine. The full sized originals remained on the notebook with back up to a flash drive. The Amazon description and most of the "reviews" available online indicate this netbook has the feature. If you go to the Toshiba website, you can figure this out if you know what you're looking for.
