Decent - Wireless Home Stereo Review

By Evan Washington

That song being the wonderful Nature Boy by Nenna Freelon. I know this is cliched, but I literally heard notes that I never heard before. First let me tell you the good things. Yes, the quality of the sound is excellent.

Like a new remote control on a new TV, yes, it does require some getting used to but we have had fantastic feedback otherwise. These are simply the best full-sized wireless headphones that I have heard.

Small delay may be a problem when using as hearing aid for TV I have used the Sennheiser model 130's for years and have been perfectly happy with them. I found them very comfortable and could wear them continuously without any discomfort.

I think RS130 is analog sound and RS180 is digital sound. Sound quality is very good and no static background noise. If you are out of range, you get some chopping and then the signal drops off. I prefer this to the hissing I would get using the analog 140. I can't vouch for the range though; I have little reason to prance around with these. But as for upstairs and downstairs in the same house, no worries with these headphones.

The batteries last about the rated 24 hours before requiring a recharge. You do get about a half hour of warning that the batteries are getting close to being discharged. Not only do they sound better than my old HD595 pair, the wireless mode is truly the next step in multimedia enjoyment. Provided you remember to charge them every night, you will never run out of battery life.

You can listen to quieter things like dialogue without that annoying ever-present hissing though, thank goodness. I guess it all comes down to your source, but plugged into a good receiver they can work very well, especially if you turn them up a step. No interference issues with my home wireless (operates on 2.4-2.8 GHz auto selecting). They have excellent bass response that will actually tickle your ears, depending on what you are listening to of course.

It has completely worthless buttons on the side that are too small and flat and unusable while you are wearing. You have to take off the phones to adjust volume, etc. In my discussion with the Sennheiser rep, I pointed out this reviewer's comment about this and the rep said to just turn down the TV. After I said that wasn't an option, he then stated that the 180's won't behave any different than the 130's. I am impressed I can hear things on my games I never knew existed and the music and television is awesome. Plus these are much more comfortable than the older set that I had. They're also fairly easy to open (the fit of the plastic container containing the actual headphones and base was a bit snug, so there was a bit of tugging there). Setting the headphones up is very easy.
