How to Improve Your Communication Skills

By Patrick Nikenya

First let us talk about the history of communication skills. It all begun in Ireland where a historical stone; Blarney Stone, was thought to give special gifts the moment you kissed it. Nowadays, all this sounds like superstition but we don't have power to question the traditions.

When it comes to conversations there is a lot to learn. Some of the rules taught in radio programs, clubs and talk shows are the same rules that we have to apply in our interactions. Scientists say that the brain does double the work done by the mouth when talking. Therefore, you can be able to have an efficient conversation by first knowing yourself.

1. What you know.

Learning the fundamentals is education, but practicing what you have learned is what's needed to be an effective speaker. You can better your skills by working on your constraints.

2. Listening.

Listening builds the confidence to say what we think is right. Thus, listening is vital just like asking questions. You should stop being scared.

3. Humility

All humans are prone to making mistaes; as a result you might say something you don't mean. Ask the listeners if you said the word correctly, and if they are not sure you can make a joke out of it. This is a good way to get away with it.

4. Eye contact

You have got to shift your attention to the audience by maintaining eye contact. Even though there is one individual who looks attractive you should always stay focused.

5. Kidding around

Tension and boredom can be eliminated by using humour when giving your speech. The crowd will pay attention if you use humor and they will also get an impression that you are friendly.

6. Be like the rest of them

When the opportune moment comes you need to interact with the listeners. That's the opportunity to share ideas and learn new things from them. This is how many people improve their communication skills.

7. Me, myself and I

There's a time when you may find yourself singing to yourself. Are you wondering how this is relevant? When preparing for the speech you can stand in front of the mirror so your pitch is balanced before the day comes.

8. With a smile

Just like eye contact, a smile boosts your delivery. The crowd will get the message better when you put on a smile.

9. A role model

In your life there must be someone who impresses you by the way that he or she delivers a speech. You can learn from such folks how to deliver your speech by paying attention to what they emphasize and the pitch they use.

10. Preparation

Preparing on time is the best way to improve your delivery. Some people write their speech either on the palm of the hand or in a notebook. Getting your speech straight from your head is comfortable than this way.

These are some of the suggestions that will help you improve your communication skills. It doesn't hurt to learn from the professionals. Other people also should be able to learn from you.
