Options For Electronic Waste Recycling

By Cheri Knowles

Electronics have components in them that are not safe to go into the landfill, and most people are trying to reduce trash, anyway. These people are looking for electronic waste recycling options, but it isn't always easy to find them. Often, when people take these items to the landfill, they are surprised and dismayed by the prices charged.

However, since electronics are only growing in popularity, some companies have started to figure out what to do with them. You can send your computer to be recycled for free at many websites. They may or may not provide the postage to send it it. If it still works, they may even pay you a nominal amount for it.

Several large retailers of electronics also offer similar options. They may have bins or counters where unwanted electronics can be dropped off to be recycled for free. They can sometimes reuse the parts or remove and retain the elements used in the products, which allows them to provide this service for free.

Some people can just put their unwanted electronics in the recycle bin that their city collects. Although this varies from city to city, some are now accepting electronics as just another component of mixed recycling. This means that with your bottles, cans and newspapers, you can also put your broken MP3 player or television.

Although these are less popular now that there are so many other options, only a decade ago the place where you went was a green company. These would offer cheaper options for getting rid of unwanted electronics than the dump, and would guarantee that all recyclable parts were being recycled. Some still exist, but they are less common.

If you are trying to get rid of something responsibly, the internet is a great place to start. Or, you could make some phone calls to your city about their handling of electronics. They may have suggestions for electronic waste recycling options even if they do not provide it.
